has issued a public health advisory advising consumers and prescribers that Alli (semaglutide) should be used only to treat patients with severely reduced body mass index (BMI) who have not lost an excessive amount of weight after the age of 35 with overweight and obesity.
“Many patients with severely reduced BMI will not be able to lose an excess weight,” said Dr David Cox, chair of the General Clinical Pharmacology Branch of the CVS Health clinical pharmacology unit. “Patients should only be switched to an effective alternative weight loss medication if the patient is at risk of serious adverse events related to weight loss.”
CVS sells generic Alli under the name Xenical. CVS sells Alli internally under the same name under the name Alli by Roche.
Alli is the brand name for the drug Alli-lacedical from Novo Nordisk manufacturer Novoform, which is the patent-protected trade name for semaglutide. Semaglutide is a small, oral capsule administered by a doctor. Alli is also sold under the name Ozempic.
Alli was the first drug to be approved for the treatment of obesity in adults in 2003, the first indication for which it is available in the EU and available in the US. Semaglutide is also in a development phase, which will see semaglutide become available in the US in October of 2023.
